The U.S.S. Bucephalus, NKC-135 was the fourth of eight Mayweather Class Deep Space freighter / transports under the authority of Starfleet Transport Command. Constructed at Starfleet’s Newport News Earth Orbital Shipyards and commissioned in 2240, the Bucephalus and her sister ships would form a critical component in Starfleet’s continuing mission to transport supplies and personal to both existing and new Federation star bases and colonies. Unfortunately, as important as these transports were, upgrades would be few and far between, as illustrated by the included Starship Datasheet of 2265, which shows only a partial upgrade to the ships warp engines while retaining the original 2240 command deck. This model is based on the kitbashed version and datasheet created by artist and modeler John Payne, which he in turn had based on the AMT Leif Erickson Galactic Cruiser plastic model kit first produced in1968, a design my Matt Jefferies, the designer of the original USS Enterprise NCC-1701.
