(THIS SHIP IS THE ORIGINAL 1963 DESIGN, THE ''SOLON TURMAN'' (see my page) WAS LENGTHENED IN 1971)
Laid down as the commercial breakbulk cargo ship SS Adabelle Lykes in 1963 and plying the commercial trades for over 20 years, the Adabelle Lykes was turned over to the US Maritime Administration for a newbuild in 1984.
In 2008 Cape Chalmers was instead pulled from the James River Reserve Fleet in August 2008 and towed to Charleston where she has resumed her service as a static training aid to this day!
