Built in 1920, this building was originally a hardware store until 1925, when Sears, Roebuck & Co. selected Evansville as the site of its first free-standing retail store. The new store opened on October 5, 1925 and featured a dazzling array of products and lavishly decorated window displays. Sears built a two-story addition along 4th Street in 1937 (which was later expanded to four stories). In 1963, Sears opened a new store at Washington Square Mall on the city's east side. This original store was closed in 1975. #evansville #historic_places #indiana #national_register #sears #sears_building
