The telescope is an instrument that collects light or other electromagnetic radiation from a distant object, concentrates it in a point (called a fire) and produces an enlarged image.
Although the term "telescope" usually refers to the optical telescope, operating in the frequencies of visible light, there are also telescopes sensitive to other frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum.
The name, derived from the Greek τηλε (tēle) which means "far" and σκοπεῖν (skopein) or "look, see"), is a word of author coined by the Greek mathematician John Demisiani (Ἰωάννης Δημησιάνος), April 14, 1611, in the banquet offered in Rome by Prince Federico Cesi, in honor of the cooptation of Galileo Galilei in the Accademia dei Lincei.
