Opened in March 2004, the 92,000-square-foot building at Iowa State University was constructed entirely with private donations, the most notable donors being Steve and Debbie Bergstrom. The $9.6 million structure was built over the existing turf practice field as a part of the Johnny Majors Practice Complex west of Jack Trice Stadium. The facility is used by football, soccer, and other teams for practice, training and conditioning as well as for recruiting new athletes. RDG Bussard Dikis Inc. of Des Moines, Iowa designed the project with its turtle shell-shaped roof with numerous curves and angles supported by a tubular space truss. Inside, the 88,000 square-foot surface is set to 55 degrees in the winter and cooled by vent fans in the summer to keep athletes comfortable. This model was done by Benjamin Schwartz.
