Carrie Chapman Catt Hall is the home of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University. Opened in 1893 as Agriculture Hall, the structure was designed by Josselyn and Taylor of Cedar Rapids in the Queen Anne Revival picturesque style with steep roofs, dormer windows and patterned brickwork. In the early 1900s, Agriculture Engineering moved in and it was called the Agriculture Engineering Building for a brief period. In 1922 the Agriculture Engineering Department moved into its own building and Agriculture Hall was renamed Botany Hall. In 1968 the Botany Department moved to the newly opened Bessey Hall, and Botany Hall was renamed Old Botany to distinguish it from the new location of the Botany Department. The building was condemned in 1966, though it was still partially occupied until 1994 when extensive renovations were done by Baldwin White Architects to save the building. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, the building was renamed Carrie Chapman Catt Hall in 1995 in honor of the first woman graduate at ISU and founder of the League of Women Voters. Catt Hall is also the home of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics and the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. This model was completed by Benjamin Schwartz.
