Stadion De Meer

Stadion De Meer

Alexander de Sévaux
'Stadion De Meer' was Ajax' previous home ground. Construction was completed in december of 1934. After 1934 it served as Ajax' home ground for 62 years. During those 62 years a lot got changed in the stadium: Expansions of the stands during the 1960s; a roof on top of the Jack Reynolds stand in 1965; a new restaurant in front of the main stand in 1968; 4 floodlights in 1971 and in 1984 both the terraces behind the goal (the 'Stadszijde' and 'Diemenzijde') also got covered by a roof. 'De Meer' was also the first Dutch stadium with skyboxes. These were installed in 1985, although supporters protested. The last thing that got added in 'De Meer' was extra fencing behind the goals after an Ajax supporter threw a metal bar at a goalkeeper in a European match against Austria Wien. This moment made people at Ajax realize that 'De Meer' was outdated and should either be renovated or demolished. Sadly it was demolished in 1996 and Ajax moved to the then called Amsterdam ArenA.
