The amphitheatre in Pompeii was built in around 80BC and is the oldest Roman amphitheatre in existence, pre-dating the Colosseum in Rome. In 59AD there was a fight in the Amphitheatre between the Pompeians and visiting Nocerians resulting in many deaths. The Senate banned future contests in the amphitheatre for 10 years.
