The monitor top was introduced in 1927. This model is a 1940s retrofit which changed the copper coils and sulfur dioxide to freon gas. The entire top of the refrigerator lifted off for ease of maintenance, so the retrofit was simply a matter of lifting off the old sulfur unit and replacing it with the newer freon unit.
