This is a Soap Box Derby racer constructed and driven by Terry Townsend who won the 1957 local Championship in Anderson, Indiana and the World Championship in Akron, Ohio a month later. He also clocked the fastest heat of the day in Akron. Terry's family began in Derby in 1952 with his brother Brooks, followed by Terry and younger brother Barney, who would also become World Champ in 1959. Anderson has won six World Titles to date.
Terry's car design became the standard many car builders emulated over the next ten years. Built on a teardrop plan it featured a high foredeck with cleft, to view ahead while crouched low, and a lower, more curvilinear rear deck. The painting of the white stars on the blue nose was by his mother Mildred. The car was fitted with a Derby issue steering wheel standard on most cars at the time.
This model is created from archival and recent photos showing the extant car from various angles. The model has livery of how the car looked when it raced in Akron.
