In November 1984, Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius is given command of Red October, a new Typhoon-class ballistic missile submarine with a "caterpillar drive", rendering it invisible to other submarines. But Ramius and his offices have secretly agreed to take the sub and defect to the Americans, a plan soon discovered, sending the entire Russian navy in pursuit to destroy the sub. Captain Ramius eventually contacts the Americans, forming a plan to fake a reactor leak on board the Red October, forcing the crew to abandon ship, then submerging the sub to fake its’ destruction at the hands of the Americans. The Red October then rendezvous with the American sub USS Dallas and the DSRV-1 Mystic rescue vehicle which transfers members of the Dallas crew to the Red October, where Captain Ramius requests asylum for himself and his officers.
