Sovereign Hill - Gold Smelting Works

Sovereign Hill - Gold Smelting Works

Tom D.
The Gold Smelting Works resembles one of the Quartz Mine’s out-buildings. The Smelting Works contains an auditorium where visitors witness the final, dramatic stage in the story of gold – the smelting and pouring of liquid gold into a bar of 3 kilograms. This demonstration includes information about the history of Ballarat’s gold. Visitors also have the opportunity to see a fully-restored 19th century coin press in action. Donated by Stokes of Melbourne, this magnificent press was originally used in the business established by Thomas Stokes, who came to Australia in the Gold Rush. In the Smelting Works, visitors may purchase an engraved souvenir medallion presented in a hand crafted timber case. Gold nuggets and flakes of gold from Australian goldfields are also available.
