The Joel D. Valdez Library, also known as the Pima County Public Library, is the main branch of a series of libraries throughout the Tucson area. Located at 101 North Stone Avenue, the library lies on 96,000 square feet and contains four floors, one of which is only for administrative purposes. The building was constructed in 1989, and opened in May of 1990. The library is open for 61 hours a week, and recieves about 700,000 vistors yearly. The library was named after one of Tucson's most prominent city managers. The grassy lawn to the south of the building was the to-be site of the now dead "Century Tower" skyscraper proposal.
