The General Motors Diesel Division (GMDD) of Canada manufactured the GP40-2W at around the same time as EMD was producing the GP40-2 in the United States; from 1972 until 1986. Two variants of this locomotive exist; one with a shorter fuel tank and lighter frame designated GP40-2 (the W is added by rail enthusiasts to differentiate them from their USA counterparts), and the other with a heavy frame and full size fuel tank designated GP40-2L.
The Canadian National Railway ordered hundreds of these locomotives, fitted with a distinctive 4-window wide-nose cab.
Locomotive 3029 was relocated from the Ottawa Valley Railroad to the Berkshire & Eastern (B&E) shortly after taking over Pan Am Southern operations in 2023, along with locomotives from other Genesee & Wyoming (G&W) controlled railroads such as The Bay Line, Buffalo & Pittsburgh, and others. BERX 3029 received new logos for the Berkshire & Eastern
