and another 747 for a special day (a bit more on time :s)
Here we have Pan Am's 747-121, Clipper Victor!
Her name, upon delivery, was Clipper Victor, but when the aircraft that was scheduled to fly the first 747 flight(Clipper Young America), had a problem with molten metal in its engines, Clipper Victor was used instead and so Became the first 747 to operate a commercial flight. Pan Am even re-stenciled the name on the nose to "Clipper Young America" and apparently, this stuck!
From then on, the aircraft was known as "Clipper Young America". Only her Registration told of her origin as Clipper Victor.
Interestingly but rather un-fortunately is the fact that she was also the first 747 to be Hijacked.
Still in her very first year of operation, She was Hijacked and flown to Cuba.
After this incident, Pan Am decided to change her name BACK to Clipper Victor!
However this did not bring back her original luck.
On the 27th of March 1977, she was involved in the Infamous Tenerife airport disaster, in which 335 of her 396 passengers and crew were killed.
The livery she appears in here was the first livery Pan Am gave there 747's. Compared to the later cheatline livery, this one has a slightly slimmer cheatline and smaller PAN AM titles, aswell as the aircrafts name in small black letters instead of the later blue calligraphy. On the later livery, the polished metal base curved upwards to just behind the tail, where as on this livery, it keeps straight.
Here is an aircraft for the US independence day! :) You wont believe how many US flag's i've seen flying on my way home today 0_o
Thanks to 707 and William T :)
