The Pullman Palace Car Works: Corliss Engine House and Boiler Room

John W.
This building was built especially to house the Corliss Engine shown at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. The engine, powered by the twelve boilers in the adjacent building, supplied heat and light to the entire complex until it was shut down in 1910. The engine was then scrapped, and the chimney demolished; however, the buildings were in existence until the 1950s or 1960s.
