Space Shuttle Enterprise was the first space shuttle ever constructed. The Shuttle only flew five times. Construction began on the first Shuttle on June 4, 1974. Designated OV-101, it was originally planned to be named Constitution. However, a write-in campaign caused it to be renamed after the Starship Enterprise, featured on the television show Star Trek. On January 31, 1977 Enterprise was ready for operational tests at Edwards Air Force Base. The first test was the most important test other than the last test. Tests two throught four where identical to test one. Test five was the only test Enterprise flew without the turbulence-reducing tail cone. These test where to test the way the orbiter would land after a mission. Space Shuttle Enterprise was Considered a replacement for Challenger after it disintegrated on January 28, 1986. Instead, Endeavour was built in Challengers place. Why am I posting this model? Because It's NASA's 50th Birthday! All week From Today until next monday I will post a NASA related model.
