The Dash 8-40CW, or C40-8W, is a six-axle diesel-electric locomotive produced by GE Transportation from 1989 to 1994, being the last Dash 8 series locomotive to be produced by GE before rolling out the Dash 9 series later on. The C40-8W is equipped with GE's FlexiCoil C trucks, is capable of producing 4,000 horsepower, and is fitted with a North American wide-nose cab.
The Atkinson, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railway (ATSF), often shortened simply to Santa Fe, purchased 152 C40-8W locomotives numbered 800-951, and were designated as part of Santa Fe's "Super Fleet" of engines. 927 to 951 were classified as C41-8W, as they were upgraded with an additional 100 HP. After the Burlington Northern - Santa Fe merger, these locomotives were absorbed into BN's fleet. 800-866 were sold to Canadian National (CN), and the rest of these units are now in storage.
