The F40PH is an iconic diesel-electric passenger locomotive built from 1975 to 1992 by the General-Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD), and from 1988 to 1998 by Morrison-Knudsen (M-K). These locomotives have a top speed of 110 mph and have a power output of 3,000 to 3,200 HP. The locomotive is based on EMD's GP40 road switcher, fitted with a full-width cab and body and given a head-end power (HEP) generator.
As Amtrak replaced its fleet of F40PHs with new GE Genesis locomotives, they converted several F40PHs into non-powered control units (NPCU), and they had a 90 added to their road number.
Amtrak 90406 is ex. Amtrak 406, which up until recently retained its original road number even after being converted to an NPCU. It was repainted into the iconic Amtrak Phase III livery, along with Amtrak 145, a GE Genesis P42DC, to commemorate 40 years of operation.
