Elbow of Cross Ledge Lighthouse, Delaware Bay

John W.
The Elbow of Cross Ledge Light was built between 1907 and 1910. The building was "A two-level octagonal house with an octagonal cupola, which is surmounted by a black lantern room." The tower was built to replace the defunct Cross Ledge Lighthouse, a couple of miles southeast of the station. The crew was removed from the station in 1951 after it was severely damaged in a hurricane. In 1953, an ore freighter crashed into the tower, demolishing most of the tower. The resulting rubble of this structure was pushed off the caisson and an oxide red "oil derrick" skeleton tower was built in its place. This is a slightly simplified view of the original building. #boat #brown #cab #cabin #cape #delaware #deleware #fresnel #green #iron #jersey #lamp #lantern #lens #Light #lighthouse #new #new_jersey #occulus #oculus #pennsylvania #philadelphia #porthole #shoal #shutter #station #steel #stone
