Walney was originally connected to Barrow by ferry. At low tide you could also cross Walney channel by the more dangerous footbridge. Talks began in 1897 and after a battle between many companies for the contract it was awarded to Sir William Arrol & Co. Construction began in mid 1905 and was opened on 30 July 1908, with a build cost of £175,000. For 27 years, a toll was charged until the 4 April 1935 when the late Queen Mother officially renamed it Jubilee Bridge to mark the silver jubilee of King George V. It was the bridge's centenary year in July 2008. #BarrowinFurness #bascule #bridge #Cumbria #Jubilee_Bridge #Walney #Walney_Bridge
