Bolger design 'Wish II' sailboat

John O.
Crude (but to scale and including all major elements) model of the sharpie, Wish II, from the book "30 Odd Boats" by Phil Bolger (who also wrote the masterpiece, and more recent, 'Boats With an Open Mind'}. It's an 'instant boat', built with 18 sheets of 1/2" plywood (doubled on the bottom). 20' x 5'7" x 8" draft. 178 sq ft sail. 2170 lbs displacement including 700 lbs inside ballast. The boat sleeps an honest 4 adults (2 under cockpit). Bolger drew Wish II as a stock plan but ultimately called it "an ambitious design that missed being good" and didn't try to get any built. He thought it was "plain ugly," too narrow given the high freeboard for live ballast (warm bodies) topside to do much good, and he thought the cockpit "too exposed to be really comfortable in rough water." He was however pleased with the cabin arrangements, said it wasn't "a bad boat in most ways" and he was certain Wish II would be a good sailor, "safe in any ordinary weather or in a gale if it held together and was handled competently." Now, as for the looks...if you have an appreciation for the designer's 'square boats,' (which this is not, but it does bear a resemblance to them) Wish II might be right up your alley. #boat #Bolger #leeboard #sailboat #sharpie #spritboom #yawl
