The SD40-2 is a six-axle diesel electric locomotive built by the General Motors Electro-Motive Division, or EMD for short, from 1972 to 1986. Classified as a road switcher, this locomotive was designed to pull medium to large freight trains, while also being able to perform switching maneuvers.
Pan Am Railways purchased five SD40-2 rebuilds from the Quebec, North Shore & Labrador Railway (QNS&L) and numbered them 3400 to 3404. These locomotives were acquired by CSX following the merger in 2022, and then served on the Berkshire & Eastern system pulling trains between East Deerfield, MA and Rotterdam Junction, NY.
As of January 2025, the lease on these locomotives has ended and the five former Pan Am Railways 3400 series SD40-2s have left the former Pan Am Railways territory with an unknown fate.
