The Roman-Catholic Peter and Paul cathedral was begun in 1883 and inaugurated in 1885. .It was designed and build by Franciscus Harmes CssR. The interior decorations were designed by Arnold Borret. The building is constructed entirely of Surinamese hardwood. It is one of the largest wooden structures in the Caribbean. In 2008 major repairs were carried out. In 2009 the building was re-opened to the public.
