USS Alabama (BB-60) is a South Dakota-class battleship of the United States Navy, the sixth US Navy warship to bear the name, but only the third to be commissioned. Alabama was commissioned in 1942 and served in World War II on the Western European and Pacific fronts. She was decommissioned in 1947 to be placed in reserve. She was retired in 1962, and in 1964, Alabama was returned to Mobile Bay and began operating as a museum ship a year later. The ship was designated a National Historic Site in 1986
