Among the tallest buildings in the Western Hemisphere and an icon of New York City, One World Trade Center was built in 2006 for the difficult task of replacing the fallen Twin Towers, lost to the infamous terrorist attacks of 2001. The 541m (417m roof height) skyscraper stands within the rebuilt World Trade Center complex, directly before the footprints of the original towers. Despite the criticism its design has faced over the years, it's indisputably a testament to the country's strength and determination, proven when construction pushed on, even through Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
