The McDowell house was the home of Ephraim McDowell. McDowell performed the first successful ovarian tumor surgery on December 25, 1809. He successfully removed the tumor using one of the bedrooms of the house as an operating room.
The property had its own Apothecary Shop connected to the house, which is a shop that sells medicine and medical tools. Patients came from all around to see one of the best physicians in that time. (1797 to 1820) Today the house is open for tours. Schools are able to visit the house, apothecary and its gardens. You can also visit the overlooking Constitution Square.
