The Lions Gate Bridge, officially known as the First Narrows Bridge, is a suspension bridge that crosses Burrard Inlet and connects the City of Vancouver to the North Shore municipalities. The structure's name refers to two large mountain peaks north of Vancouver called The Lions.
The total length of the bridge including the north viaduct is 1,823 metres (5,890 feet), the tower height is 111 m (364 ft), and it has a marine clearance of 61 m (200 ft). At its south end, Prospect Point in Stanley Park provides a high foundation for the southern abutment minimizing the requirement for a large approach structure, but the low flat delta to the north required construction of an extensive viaduct.
The bridge has three lanes including a reversible center lane used to accommodate fluctuating traffic patterns. The daily traffic volume on the bridge is roughly 60,000 - 70,000 vehicles and it forms a vital part of Highways 99 and 1A.
