Gewehr 1888

M L.
Gew.88 (also known as 'Komissiongewehr' because of being developed by Rifle Testing Commission of German Army) was German answer for French Lebel rifle. It was designed in late 80's of XIX century, and has enter service in 1888. Because of many problems with rifle like feeding failures, explodig chambers or rusting because of water trapped in barrel jacket, Gew.88 was quickly replaced by famous Mauser 98. Problems was caused by commission members inexperienced in developing firearms, Gew.88 was a mix of other rifles: magazine design was copied from Mannlicher M1886, barrel rifling was a direct copy of Lebel rifling which wasn't designed for 7,92mm bullet. Although production of Komissiongewehr was ended in 1897, it was often used by German army during WW1, by Weimar Republic Army after WW1 and even in last days of WW2 by German Volkssturm.
