A remarkable project by the talented father and son partnership of B.H. Bakker (1879-1951) and C.M. Bakker (1903-1989). It consists of a handsome double house and a perpendicular Smederij building. They are separated by a driveway to a rear yard with garages and offices (1934, by others). It is curious that a Smederij is so ‘architectural’ - until you realize that the ‘Smid’ was the Tesla mechanic of this age! While detailing could be mistaken for the work of W.M. Dudok and the ‘Hilversum school’, the Bakker’s influence is clear. The form is fairly standard, but the detailing and brick patterning is exceptional. The effort that went into this detailing enhances a ‘background’ building into a precious urban landmark. The model is (mostly) based on the architects drawings so does not completely accord with current conditions. The Smederij building was modified significantly in 1936 to convert it to housing units. It was recently modified again to convert the main floor back to retail.
