The AC44C6M is a six-axle AC-traction diesel-electric locomotive rebuild initiated by Norfolk Southern in 2015 and is ongoing today. The program used Norfolk Southern's Dash 9-40C and Dash 9-44CW locomotives as the base for the rebuilt engines. While Dash 9-44CWs may still be seen on the Norfolk Southern system, it won't be long before they are converted to AC44C6Ms. Like their source locomotives, they are capable of producing the standard 4,400 horsepower found on many modern day American road diesels.
Norfolk Southern has completed 700 units thus far, and hundreds more are planned in the future. They are now a common sight on NS's freight trains. Some have additional decals below the cab side road numbers with "DC to AC" written before a 3-Phase Power symbol.
