The Hochzeitturm or wedding tower was built in 1908 as an exhibition building and was designed by the architect Joseph Maria Olbrich, one of the leaders of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony at Matildenhohe. The Wedding Tower and the neighbouring Exhibition Building were used as a venue for the members of the artists’ colony to display their artistic work. The artists of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony were part of the Jungendstil movement.
