Simple Track Saw Jig For Plywood + 2x4 Rips

Simple Track Saw Jig For Plywood + 2x4 Rips

This ultra simple track saw jig is quick, easy, and cheap to build. It's great for making cuts across the short dimension of 4'x 8' sheet goods. For cutting across the long dimension, just attach (using a removable connector bracket) a second, identical jig, making sure that the fences and reference edges are perfectly alinged. (Be sure to use the opposite factory edge when cutting the MDF fence for the second jig.) A half sheet of 1/2" MDF and a half sheet of 1/8" masonite (tempered hardboard) is enough material to build two of these track saw jigs and the connector bracket to fasten them together, with plenty left over to build my crosscut jig (https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model/26ee4d5d-4d37-49d7-aec0-9340a4dace05/Simple-Cutoff-Jig-for-Circular-Saw) - and you'll still have some decent size scraps left over for future projects. Once the jig is assembled, just place the edge of the wide side of your saw's shoe against (the factory edge of) the fence and run the saw along the fence to cut off the excess on the 4" side of the jig's base. This creates the reference edge of your jig. Using the jig is simple- just align the reference edge to your cut marks, clamp it in place, and run your saw along the fence to make a perfect cut. No need to draw a long line to connect the cut marks, nor to carefully try to follow that line when cutting. To use the jig to safely to rip a 2x4 (or 2x3 or 2x6, etc.), put a second board under the narrow (non-cutting) side of the jig (as needed) for support and align the reference edge to your cut marks. Clamp it in place, make the cut.
