Garden Gateway is an airport terminal park, providing an outdoor seating and lounging area for fliers, their families and airport staff. It could either be installed as a courtyard or a vestpocket park--taking inspiration from New York City's Paley Park. Many features in the garden were chosen to mimick the experience of flying in a more natural and relaxed setting.
The garden features colorful Tenshon Shade Sails that provide aesthetic and fuction, shading a large area of the park above the main seating area. The Y-shaped poles holding the sails were chosen to mimick the look of wings in flight. Eight 18' x 18' sage colored sails and six 18' x 9' sails in ivory were chosen to provide natural-colored aesthetic variation in the park that mimicked the stripes on a runway.
Wrap-around benches provide ample seating for park patrons and also acts as a barrier between visitors and the support beams for the the shade sailes--allowing for comfortable circulation between the beams without feeling like one may run into a pole. The benches were designed to allow for more vegetation to grow while also mimicking the baggage claim one may find inside the terminal.
The fountain on the far side of the park takes architectural sound inspriation from New York's Paley Park. The sound of the waterfall echoing underneath the shade sails within the park muffles the loud sounds of the terminal surrounding it.
