A simple star fort or 'trace italienne.' This type of fort developed in the late 15th and early 16th centuries after the invention of gunpowder changed the way seiges were conducted. Note the low, thick, sloping walls and the sloped earthworks outside the ditch, angled to help protect against cannon fire while allowing defenders a clear shot.
