The GE Dash 8-40CW, also known as the C40-8W, is a six-axle diesel-electric locomotive manufactured from 1989 to 1994. The C40-8W rides on GE's Flexicoil C trucks. This unit is capable of producing 4,000 HP and has a top speed of 70 mph. The Berkshire & Eastern Railroad is a newly formed Genesee & Wyoming (G&W) regional railroad as the neutral operator of what was formerly Pan Am Southern, LLC, which was a joint venture between Pan Am Railways and Norfolk Southern. The B&E operates an eclectic roster, including several generations of Dash 8 locomotives. For Dash 8-40CWs, it currently rosters engines 7655, 7727, 7797, 7835, 7875, and 7898 which were formerly Pan Am, nee CSX, locomotives, and an additional six, 7876 - 7881, from GECX. Of these, only the GECX locomotives have been repainted so far. 7876 wears a special paint scheme honoring veterans and military service members, adorned with its front and rear in yellow and the rest of the body in camo green.
