When completed in 1911 the Monroe Street Bridge was the longest concrete arch span in the world (by 1 foot). The main arch has a clear span of 281 feet; total length is 896 feet. The bridge structure was designed by John Chester Ralston, then Spokane's City engineer; the railings and pavilions by the noted architects Kirtland Cutter and Karl Malmgren. The bridge was closed for 2 years, from 2003 to 2005, and completely rebuilt above the arches. Cutter's and Malmgren's architectural details were carefully restored. The bridge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. #bridge #concrete_arch #historic_bridge #Kirtland_Cutter #Spokane #Spokane_River
