The F40PH is an iconic diesel-electric passenger locomotive built from 1975 to 1992 by the General-Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD), and from 1988 to 1998 by Morrison-Knudsen (M-K). These locomotives have a top speed of 110 mph and have a power output of 3,000 to 3,200 HP. The locomotive is based on EMD's GP40 road switcher, fitted with a full-width cab and body and given a head-end power (HEP) generator.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) purchased 18 F40PHs between 1978 and 1980 to replace their aging Budd RDC cars. Later, the MBTA added a couple of F40PH variants, such as the F40PH-2C and F40PHM-2C to their roster. While MBTA's F40PHs have been retired, a rebuild program for the -2C variants was initiated in 2017, with all 37 of them locomotives being rebuilt into the F40PH-3C by MotivePower (MPI). Externally, these were all given LED headlights, e-bells, and the new MBTA paint scheme which can be found on their HSP-46 locomotives.
