This project was initiated as a competition that whilst being won by this team required significant further detailed interaction with the clients in order to commit the building interactively with the aboriginal peoples very particular social requirements. The process was extensive and enriching. We thrived on the opportunity that an educational building might be considered, as would be at home. Of primary concern was the ' big room' that such a place could inform both users and visitors alike as to the 'open' and welcoming nature this building sought to represent. Rooms deliberately opened outward, edges becomming blurred, the generous linear corridors seen as formal exentions of 'pathways in the bush', providing places for yarns and greetings. A story wall that over time will gather its own explanation and learning space resonsible to the vibrant outside. The occupants of such a building are accessible located so the private garden informs their day, people remain paramount. Their connection to others and to their environment was their priority. #2003 #architecture #Australia #awards #birabahn_indigenous_center #Callaghan #Harper #institute #Leplastrier #NSW #RAIA #Stuchbury
