The ‘’Charlie’’ was designed to appeal to Ballarat’s middle class men. Its bar was a focal point of social life on Main Road. Our Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Parlours provide quiet retreats. Both contain writing equipment – an essential feature of goldfields hotels. There is also a large dining room and a bagatelle room. Upstairs, the bedrooms show that only married couples had a private room – men paid for a bed only, in a shared room. The Meeting Room, opposite, is permanently set for a Masonic meeting.(There is some evidence that John Gibbs, the owner had connections with the Masons.)
