A tower structure I designed to raise a 350 gallon water tank over 8 ft off the ground. This height will give adequate head pressure for a gravity-fed water delivery system – useful during power outages. Storing the water in a tank for safe uses other than sanitation and gardening will require additional UV and filtration measures.
Using Google to research questions about this structure style, I have read that built-up posts have only a 60% load rating versus solid posts. However, this model assumes the posts will be composed of four layers of 2x8 lumber - creating posts 6" x 7.5" thick. If joined from both sides by hex or carriage bolts, the posts should have a relative strength equal to or greater than a solid 6x6 post.
You may notice the corners of the tower use 4x4 posts – these are not entirely necessary to provide support for the structure, but I felt they added some symmetry to the design.
