Old Melbourne Cricket Ground

Old Melbourne Cricket Ground

Tom D.
A very detailed model of how the Melbourne Cricket Ground was from 1967-1990. The MCC Members Pavilion had stood since 1928. The Southern Stand was built in 1937, with the Olympic Stand (aka Northern Stand) completed in 1956 for the Olympic Games. The Western Stand (later named the Ponsford Stand) was completed in 1967. This configuration remained until the demolition of the old Southern Stand at the end of 1990, replaced by the Great Southern Stand in 1992. The old Ponsford and Olympic Stands have both since been replaced with modern versions, as well as the MCC Members Stand. The record crowd of 121,696 for the 1970 VFL Grand Final remains to this day. The standing room behind the goals at the Western Stand end was replaced with seating around 1984, with the 6 light towers introduced in 1985. She was a beautiful and historical old stadium, with plenty of facelifts over the years. Check out the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hq8xjD21kAg. This model ©Tom Delany 2021.
