Llyn Stwlan is the upper reservoir for the Ffestiniog Pumped-Storage Hydroelectric Scheme which was the first of its kind in the UK. It discharges 27 cubic meters of water a second through to shafts to the power station at the bottom by the Tan-y-Grisiau reservoir. Usually overnight the water is pumped up to Llyn Stwlan by the excess energy from conventional power stations.
