Meridiana was a privately owned Italian airline headquartered in Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport. The company was set up with the name of Alisarda in 1963 by Aga Khan Prince Karīm al-Hussaynī with the aim of promoting tourism in Sardinia. In 1991 the name of the company was changed to Meridiana. In 2006, Meridiana acquired Eurofly, a company of long-haul charter flights to holiday destinations, closing 2006 with the historical record of 4,6 million passengers carried. In 2010 Meridiana fly was created by the merger with Eurofly, a In 2011 Meridiana fly completely acquired Air Italy, an Italian charter airline.It operated flights to domestic, European and intercontinental destinations. In 2017 it was announced that Qatar Airways had bought 49% of Meridiana. In 2018, Meridiana rebranded as Air Italy, announced a plan to expand its fleet and destinations, ceasing however operations in early 2020. At the time of the merger, the fleet consisted of 11 aircraft: 8 boeing 737 and 3 boeing 767.
