Thought to be obsolescent prior to the start of the Pacific war, the Type 99 dive bomber (Allied code name "Val") wrought havoc on American and allied shipping. From Pearl Harbor to the Coral Sea, Guadalcanal, The Darwin Raid and the Indian Ocean raid, the Imperial Japanese Navy seemed invincible. Not till the Battle of Midway would her star decline, as American fighters and tactics improved.. She would thereafter serve from smaller carriers that could not handle the larger replacements, and from land based units through mid 1944.
