**This is a 3D model of the Gallant-Class Escort from Star Trek Online. It should be roughly to scale. Ingame it's roughly the size of a Nova-class (170m) and when i scaled the 3D model so that the photon torpedo tubes matched it came out to ~160m. Launched in response to the fallout from the Khitomer Accords in 2399, the Gallant class was born. The Gallant-Class formed one part of a trifecta of escorts that would face off against the Klingon Empire: the Gallant, Vigilant, and Defiant classes. The Defiants were the original escort models, they were produced in some limited numbers during the Dominion War but were expensive and few. In response to the fallout from the Khitomer Accords in 2399, the Gallant and Vigilant were born in order to supplement the Defiant. The Vigilant was a slightly larger (large enough to include a holodeck) and more advanced version of the Defiant which was also only produced in limited number. The Gallant however was slightly smaller, more cheaply mass-produced, and just as offensively deadly.
Two of the features that made the Gallant distinctive from it's older cousin were the inclusion of the class's 'torpedo arms' and Wide Beam Deflector Dish:
The 'Torpedo Arms' were used for extremely rapid torpedo launches and could hold a magazine of eight torpedoes in each. These torpedoes could then be replenished either by manually loading them into the arms through use of a worker bee or by transporting torpedoes into them from the Gallant's internal storage.
The 'Wide Beam Deflector Dish' as it was called (hereafter referred to as the WBDD) , was derived from the experiences of the Defiant-Class and it's lack of scientific missions. The WBDD Inherently it was less modifiable than a directional deflector and was unsuited for double duty as a sensor or emitter. The WBDD was strictly for use as a deflector dish and as a result it was astonishingly cheap to manufacture compared to the Defiant's deflector 'nose'.
Because of it's beginnings as a Defiant variant the Gallant-Class was well suited for combat against the Borg who reemerged in force in 2409 and played a key role in defending the Alpha Quadrant against them.
Sometime after 2409 all three of the trio received a refit. The Gallant-Class was equipped them with a larger impulse drive, directional deflector dish, and upgraded communication's system. This brought it's capabilities closer to it's cousins the Vigilant and Sao Paulo (the renamed refit version of the Defiant). The original trio was also joined by the new Valiant-Class in late 2409.
