Designed by Willem Marinus Dudok (1884-1974), constructed between 1924 and 1931 This building is known internationally as one of the most influential buildings of the early modern movement. It elegantly crossed the boundaries of the traditional and international styles that were prevalent at the time. Although some writers have claimed that the design is derivative of early Frank Lloyd Wright, those who have studied this building know that it is an original development based more on Dutch De Stijl, Cubism, the Amsterdam School, and the Dutch vernacular. Willem Marinus Dudok, an Amsterdam-born Dutch military engineer, designed more than 240 buildings over his long career. Born to musicians, he felt that the great composers influenced him more than other architects. He believed that proportion, rhythm, mood, and character of music were directly transferable to architecture. In 1915, he became the director of public works for Hilversum, where, for over 40 years he produced several town plans and many superb public buildings. The Hilversum Town Hall is not only the magnum opus in the work of Dudok but also one of the most important and successful buildings in the history of Modern Architecture. The complete history of the Hilversum Town Hall is beautifully documented in the book “Raadhuis Hilversum” by Arie den Dikken and Max Cramer.
