Shaving Horse - Roy Underhill

Shaving Horse - Roy Underhill

A single 6' log can be used to make a traditional shaving horse. This model shows the way the log is used. It is modeled based on Roy Underhill's 1981 book "The Woodwright's Shop." Roy Underhill is a great country craftsman and public television personality. ~~~~~ A shaving horse is designed for shaping long narrow pieces of wood. You sit on one end and pull a drawknife, spoke shave, or other tool toward you. As you pull with your hands, you push with your foot against one end of a treadle. This treadle in turn, holds the work in place. Hence, the harder you try to move the work, the harder you hold it in place. ~~~~~ It is almost a sacrilege to use a computer program to draw up Roy's work. He describes making the bench clearly, but it is much more an expression of folk skills, wood and personality than it is of draftsmanship. ~~~~~ This model appears to be to be accurate to his design and was developed to help understand how shaving horses work. #dumbhead #Roy_Underhill #Schnitzbank #shave_bench #shave_horse #shavehorse #shaving_bench #shaving_horse #shaving_mule #shingle_horse #St_Roy #Underhill #wood_working #woodworking
