Carthage Jail. Location of the murders of mormon church founder, Joseph Smith Jr and his brother, Hyrum. June 27, 1844.
Joseph Smith Jr was the Mayor of Nauvoo and is considered the founder of the Restoration movement of which many church groups claim as their founder. Hyrum Smith was the vice mayor and Patriarch of the church.
Additionally during the tragic events, the future 3rd President of the Utah branch* of the church, John Taylor, was shot several times.
