Carthage Jail. Location of the murders of mormon church founder, Joseph Smith Jr and his brother, Hyrum. June 27, 1844. Joseph Smith Jr was the Mayor of Nauvoo and is considered the founder of the Restoration movement of which many church groups claim as their founder. Hyrum Smith was the vice mayor and Patriarch of the church. Additionally during the tragic events, the future 3rd President of the Utah branch* of the church, John Taylor, was shot several times. This sketchup drawing has the attic and roof removed for clarity. This is a work in progress and will be updated as time allows. *The Utah Branch of the church is formally known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Informally it is known as the Mormon Church, Brighamite Church, LDS Church, etc. .
