I've decided that rather than just completely erase my failed models forever, I ought to share some of the ones that I've invested a fair amount of time in: so here is the inaugural model in my new "Failed Models" collection, the U.S.S. Brandywine.
What you see here are the last three, out of six total iterations of a TOS-era transport. The Brandywine began as a variant of my Daedalus-class model, whose secondary hull was basically cut away to allow for large cargo containers to be held in place. Ultimately I was unable to reconcile what I thought was a rather cool idea for a secondary hull with the Daedalus-class' spherical primary hull, so I began experimenting.
I did not want to do another disc-shaped primary hull, so I tried elongating and narrowing a saucer into a rounded-triangular shape, and also expermimented with support pylons extending from the saucer to the warp nacelles to give the ship a more primitive look.
Eventually I decided that I liked the triangular saucer more than I liked the cargo-pod-secondary hull, so I got rid of it and tried using the triangular-saucer as a base. I wanted to retain the "naked cargo containers" idea, so I moved those to an embedded secondary hull. This resulted in the model on the left.
As you can see, it is rather clumsy looking.
At this point, I decided to completely reimagine my premise. What might a TOS-era transport with external cargo containers look like?
This led me to the middle design, or Hammerhead design.
Which I later developed into the larger Hammerhead 2 design, on the right, which is basically the same idea but with different proportions. I thought the secondary hull would have this kind of magnetic conveyor thing which could attach cargo pods in various configurations.
Ultimately though I just couldn't really get excited about a transport model, and my progress ground to a halt. I think the "Hammerhead" concept has some potential, the profile can be kind of cool, but it's something I'm going to have to come back to later, long after I've cleansed these failed versions from my system.
